Weevil found: flowers burnt
NZJN Tokyo Two thousand New Zealand cut flowers have been destroyed by burning at Tokyo Airport after quarantine inspectors found a weevil among the flowers. Airport inspectors said they found a Fullers rose weevil in one of 11 cartons of leucadendrons airfreighted by the Auck-land-based Fleur International company. The Fullers rose weevil is internationally regarded as a highly destructive specimen. It is not generally acknowledged to be present in New Zealand. The Japanese importer, Hayashi Trading Company, Ltd, said the flowers had a potential market value of
$200,000, assuming a highquality stem fetched an auction price of 100 yen (87 cents). Mr Sho Hayashi, president of Hayashi Trading, said New Zealand growers probably would suffer the loss as insurance would not cover the consignment’s destruction. Airport inspectors said the consignment had arrived on March 13, and was destroyed the next day. Mr Hayashi, a director of Fleur International, arrived in New Zealand at the week-end for a week of talks with Fleur to discuss ways of getting rid of the weevil. —Copyright, N.Z. Japan News.
