Uruguayan amnesty
Legislators have dealt Uruguay’s new civilian President his first set-back, approving an amnesty for political prisoners that would include convicted assassins and other terrorists he wants to keep in jail. The blanket amnesty passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 55-39, and needs Senate approval. The President, Dr Julio Sanguinetti, whose elected Government took over from the military on March 1, agrees with the desire to free most of Uruguay’s approximately 270 political prisoners. But he wants to continue holding 61 prisoners who are convicted of political assassinations and other violent terrorist acts.—Montevideo.
