Coin issue

NZPA-Reuter Washington Congress has passed a bill authorising the minting of gold and silver coins to help finance renovation of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour. The bill, passed by voice vote, authorises the United States mint to make up to 500,000 five-dollar gold coins, 10 million silver dollars and 25 million copper-clad half-dollars

commemorating immigrants. Each gold coin will weigh 8.359 grams and contain 90 per cent gold and 10 per cent alloys. Dollars will weigh 26.73 grams and contain 90 per cent silver.and 10 per cent copper. There will be a surcharge of $35 ($NZ78.75) on the gold coins, $7 ($NZ15.75) on the silver dollars and . $2 (SNZ4.SO) on the half-dollars.
