Population of prisons
A total of 2916 offenders were in New Zealand penal institutions on March 4, 47 more than the previous week and 121 up on 12 months earlier. Normal cell capacity on March 4 was 2853 males and females, but 2801 males and 115 females were being held that day. Totals of 293 males and nine females were on remand.
