Song for Africa charity popular

NZPA-AP New York “We are the World,” the song written to raise money for African hunger relief, is enjoying brisk sales in record stores and getting big airtime on radio stations, according to disc jockeys and stores. The song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, has audiences listening intently to identify the voices of the 46 pop artists — a veritable Who’s Who of the American music industry — who recorded it after the American music awards in January. “There has been a tremendous amount of curiosity,” said Larry Berger, programme director for

radio station WPLJ-FM in New York. The solo artists include Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. All proceeds go to African hunger relief. “Even without the curiosity, the cause and the superstars, we think it’s a legitimate record,” said Berger. British rock stars, uniting under the name Band Aid, recorded “Do They know it’s Christmas?” last year to raise money for Ethiopian famine victims. The American group calls itself U.S.A. for Africa.
