India to use N-fuel mix
NZPA-AFP New Delhi India plans to use mixed uranium-plutonium carbide as fuel for a nuclear reactor, which will be a world first, the chief of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission, Raja Ramanna has been quoted as saying. The fuel would be used in the fast breeder test reactor at Kalpakkam, near the south Indian city of Madras, when it would begin a trial
run later this year, the “Statesman" newspaper quoted Mr Ramanna as saying in Bombay. The development of this technology should save valuable foreign exchange as India now imports enriched uranium. India exploded a nuclear device in May 1974. Its official policy is to use nuclear technology to generate electricity and not to make bombs.
