Threat of pampas grass

The Nelson, Marlborough, and Golden Bay areas are at risk from pampas grass infestation, acccording to a New Zealand Forest Service director of forest management, Mr Robin Cutler. A big research programme on pampas grass at the Forest Research Institute has shown that the three regions are places where the plant is present but not yet a serious problem. “We would like people in these areas to be aware of the potential problem so that pampas grass can be controlled before it becomes serious,” Mr Cutler said. The Forest Service intended to hold a seminar and field trip about pampas grass in Nelson on March 11. Landowners would be invited to find out more about the grass and how it could be controlled. Pampas grass had become a serious problem in pine forests in Auckland and Northland, Mr Cutler said.
