Festival at marae
The first multi-cultural festival held in Christchurch on Nga Hau E Wha national marae in Pages Road yesterday was a “tremendous success,” according to the chairman of the marae trust board, Mr Peter Heal. About 500 people attended the afternoon's celebrations, featuring seven hours of music, dance, and ethnic food. Maori, Rarotongan, Samoan, Japanese, and a small group of Chinese performed concert items. They were joined by the singers, Deane Waratini and Elliot Keropea, and the Rua Kiwi Plus Show Band. Ethnic food was in continuous supply throughout the afternoon, including that cooked in a Samoan umu and in a Maori hangi. Japanese cold dishes and Chinese wontons and spring rolls were served also. Mr Heal said that the marae had made at least $l5OO, although this was not confirmed. The funds would go towards construction of marae buildings, he said.
