Pilot error cited
NZPA-Reuter Madrid Pilot error caused a Colombian Boeing 747 to crash near Madrid in November, 1983, killing 181 people, said an official Spanish report made public yesterday. But negligence by an air controller may have contributed, it said.
The pilot had ignored approach regulations and was not aware of his true position when the Avianca jumbo jet crashed just before landing at Barajas airport, said the report by a parliamentary commission investigating the disaster. An air traffic controller had failed to establish with the pilot exactly where the plane was during the landing approach. The pilot, who was killed in the accident, had been at fault for not correcting his course when a warning instrument told him to increase altitude.
