Jim Collett wins at Whakatane

PA Tauranga Punters were right on target in the Owens Group Inter-Island Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double and feature event at the Whakatane Racing Club’s programme at Tauranga yesterday. In spite of an indifferent run of form in his recent racing, the Matamatatrained Document was installed a warm each-way favourite. With the visiting Mosgiel rider, Jim Collett, aboard, the five-year-old Imperial Seal—Christelle gelding prevailed by three lengths in what became a one horse race over their last 400 m. Collett, who is currently considering a transfer to a leading North Island centre, did his cause no harm with a patient and well judged ride. Taled Off was the pacemaker for most of the journey and Document was no better than mid-field after the early rush for positions. However, going down the back straight Collett ensured that Document had racing room and the longstrider gradually improved to be second starting the big bend into the home straight. Once lined up for the run home, he quickly picked up the leader and swept clear to win unchallenged. The second favourite, Dinah’s Card, ridden by the Wingatui horseman, John Dowling, after trailing second or third through most of the journey, battled on well for second, just edging out the faster-finish-ing Trouza by a long neck. The T.A.B. double was completed in good style by the Hastings visitor, Trumpet, ridden by Marie Lyndon.

Once the field for the Hotel Oceanside Handicap had settled down, William Of Orange took over the running, with Trumpet trailing in a group of three. Trumpet came through to lead on the turn and after a good tussle up the straight held out the favourite, Eva Grace, by half a length. Light rain during the day saw the track cutting out as racing progressed and this would have affected the performances of several well-supported runners.
