Retailers oppose compulsory unionism

PA Wellington Retailers want the Government to reconsider its policy of bringing back compulsory unionism.

A remit to the Retailers’ Federation annual conference in Wellington hascalled on the Government not to proceed with a return to compulsory unionism, “doing away with the individual’s right to choose.”

Mr Richard Jones, of the Hawke’s Bay association’ in-

troduced the remit and said polls clearly showed that the majority of people in the industry did not want to be forced into joining unions.

Mr Jones said the Government had shown courage changing direction midcourse on other issues and he believed it was proceeding with the bill only because of a commitment to the union movement

The remit was passed unanimously.
