Dress standards
Sir,—On a recent evening a group was told that the jeans some of our party were wearing were unsuitable for a lounge bar. We moved into the public bar. Emblazoned above the door were the words “A reasonable standard of dress is required.” The barmaid informed us that although she would serve us on this occasion, denims were not acceptable in this bar either. I have travelled overseas extensively and noted that denims are an acceptable standard of dress anywhere else in the world. I find it ridiculous that these old-fashioned standards are still upheld in New Zealand. I can understand that bars expect a reasonable standard, but it seems ridiculous to assume that because one is wearing jeans or running shoes, one is deemed “scruffy.” — Yours, etc., JEAN GOODBRAND.
