Miners march back

NZPA-Reuter London Miners in Britain’s last defiant coalfield marched back to work today after voting to join the rest of their union in ending their year-long strike over pit closures. The State-run Coal Board said all miners in the southern English county of Kent, the last coalfield to hold out against an end to the strike, were back at work and coal production there should resume within a month. Kent’s miners had refused to return until the board agreed to reinstate men dismissed for offences during the strike. Kent’s vote at the weekend to end its isolated resistance left only 4000 miners scattered throughout other parts of Britain refusing to accept the National Union of Mineworkers’ decision to end the strike without a settlement.
