Calico Joe in form

Calico Joe, New Zealand’s greatest stake earner in show jumping, showed all his old form to win the Cloverlea Grand Prix, the premier event at the South CanterburyNorth Otago Area’s annual circuit show at Waimate. lan Campbell was the successful rider. Only three horses jumped double clear rounds, Calico Joe and two from Southland, Naude, ridden by Ngaire Lamb, and Buckingham, ridden by Claire Honeywill. The latter combination won the feature jump in Canterbury the previous week. Naude, first to go, set the standard, jumping a fast round in 38.45, but hooked a rail at what was to become the bogey fence, a large box parallel, for four faults. Calico Joe scorched round in 37.75, but also erred at the same parallel, for four faults. Buckingham, last to go, had only to jump a clear round to win, but he also fell foul of the same fence to finish equal second with Naude. The North Island junior show jumping team also competed at the show, with the best performance coming from Simon Bennett, on Detonator, on the first day, and Rebecca Deiderich, on Quest, on the second day. Canterbury riders were well represented in the lower grades in both the horse and pony rings, and the dressage, winning a good share of the prizes.
