Obituary Mr S. Madsen
PA Gisborne Mr Sven “Blondie” Madsen, a pioneer of pelagic (surface) fishing in New Zealand and a trawler skipper respected throughout the country, has died in Gisborne. Mr Madsen spent his life at sea. He arrived at Auckland from his native Denmark in 1950 as a crewman in a fishing boat. He moved to Gisborne in 1953 with two
of his brothers and since the 1960 s had worked with J. Wattie Canneries, which steadily built up its Gisborne fleet and associated factory. He was skipper of the Marine Princess, Marine Countess, and the Janet D, which foundered off Cape Palliser in August, 1983. He then took over the Western Ranger. He is survived by his wife and four children.
