Readers concerned about drownings

Several children from Parnassus, North Canterbury, have written to the Junior Press to express their concern about the large number of drownings this summer. Three letters are printed today. Children are welcome to write to the Junior Press to give their views on any subject. Letters will be considered for publication. Write to: Junior Press, “The Press” P.O. Box 1005, Christchurch.

We are troubled by the fact that too many people are drowning. People should think before they go swimming and swim between the flags. People should never swim beyond their capability. Too many people drown in the water every year. Life guards risk their lives by saving other people who are silly in the water. FIONA WRIGHT, standard 3.

I am concerned about the number of people that are drowning in the sea. I think that if people want to swim they should swim in marked places. On Waitangi Day the Life Saving Group saved a large number of people that were outside the flags. The amount of money it cost must have been great because of the ambulance and the life-saving boat. If the

life-saving team had not been there at least 18 people could have drowned, so they reported. The lifesaving team are also risking their own lives. Think before you swim and swim in the marked places. SELINA HANDYSIDE, standard 4. I think that people should watch where they swim. They should not go out too deep and then not so many people will drown. If you want to swim in a deep place make sure you are a good swimmer and swim in a safe place. Swim in the shallow and think before you swim. It is not good if 100 people drown in the water. Have a person with you. Swim between the flags and then not so many people will drown. MIRANDA WIFFEN, standard 3.
