New flights to Canada: both on Sundays

New Zealanders wanting to fly to Canada on the new direct air link in November will have a choice of two airlines — both departing from Auckland on the same day. CP Air’s DCIO to Toronto will leave Auckland at 3 p.m. on a Sunday, Air New Zealand’s Boeing 747 will take off at 10 p.m. Both airlines will fly to Canada via Honolulu, where CP Air’s flight will connect with its 747 service from Sydney to Vancouver. It is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver at 8.45 a.m. on the Sunday. Air New Zealand’s flight will arrive there at 4.35 p.m. the same day. From Honolulu, CP Air’s DCIO from Auckland will continue to Toronto, arriving at 2.45 p.m. Southbound, Air New Zealand’s service will depart from Vancouver at 7.20 p.m. on a Sunday, arriving at Auckland at 8.40 a.m. on a Tuesday. CP Air’s flight from Toronto will leave at 4.45 p.m. on a Friday and connect with its service from Vancouver at Honolulu. It will arrive at Auckland at 6.10 a.m. on a Sunday. Air New Zealand’s public relations manager, Mr Bob Wallace, sees no conflict in

the two airlines’ same-day departures from Canada. ‘We will be flying to Vancouver, CP Air’s flight will be going to Toronto,” he said. “Our emphasis is southbound — promoting inbound tourism. “We believe the service will appeal to Canadians and will be well patronised,” said Mr Wallace. Air New Zealand has had staff stationed in Canada since 1972 and, particularly in recent years, has been very active in boosting inbound tourism from Canada. The airline has offices in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton, and has a full reservations unit (based in Vancouver) serving all of Canada with a toll-free system. CP Air originally flew to New Zealand but was forced by the New Zealand Government to withdraw in the early 19705. Statistics indicate a healthy, growing market. Latest available figures to the end of last October show that 22,637 Canadians visited New Zealand in the previous 12 months. Similar statistics (to the end of June, 1984) show that 15,373 New Zealanders visited Canada in the previous 12 months.
