Egg production

Sir,—lt was interesting to note in the article “Eggs face challenge,” that the New Zealand Poultry Board stated all the reasons why egg sales have slumped internationally, with only a slight increase here in New Zealand, while carefully avoiding the real significant reason for this slump. That is people’s increased awareness of the Barbaric cruelty of the battery henfarming system. Although the Combined Co-operative Distributors have done their level best to attain a monopoly on distribution, thereby preventing retail outlets selling free-range eggs, it is surprising how many people are aware of this and take issue with it. The only way to ensure that the farmers adopt the viable alternatives available is for people to stop buying battery-produced eggs.—Yours, etc. A LEONNE WATSON. 5 March 7, 1985. 3
