Cycleways
Sir, — The Mayor’s comments (March 6) on progress on cycle routes in southern Christchurch are encouraging, but your correspondent (P. Joseph) seemed to be asking also about cycle access between the suburbs and the city centre. This has been a cause of concern to the Canterbury Cyclists’ Association for some years. Access from the south, across the railway, is restricted to several congested locations, with the notable exception of Antigua Street, an excellent cycle route. This association would like to see the Waltham Road and Colombo Street overbridges widened to provide cycle lanes. The Manchester Street pedestrian bridge also could be reconstructed as a cycle bridge spanning Moorhouse Avenue. The availability of urban transport grants now means that local authorities can get comparable subsidies for cycle facilities as for roads. Never has the provision of cycling facilities been easier. We record appreciation of the excellent road patching in Waltham Road and elsewhere. — Yours, etc., F. W. O’CONNOR, Vice-president, Canterbury Cyclists’ Association. March 8, 1985.
