Smoking banned in Red Square
NZPA-AFP Moscow Moscow authorities have banned smokers from Red Square, site of Lenin’s tomb, and neighbouring Alexander Square, site of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The Soviet capital’s evening newspaper, “Vetshernyaya Moskva,” said the ban was imposed because of the “sacred” nature of the area.
It said the city’s action followed “numerous letters” from Moscow residents and visitors about smoking there. The police had been instructed to enforce the ban strictly, the newspaper said.
