Warning on New Caledonia

PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, has repeated a warning to New Zealanders planning to visit New Caledonia that the territory was still under a state of emergency. Tourists had not been in any danger in recent disturbances there, but intending visitors should know that the situation remained unpredictable, he said. Mr Lange particularly advised against visitors to New Caledonia going outside Noumea. “New Zealanders visiting the territory should register their presence with their consulate-general in Noumea,” he said. The French Parliament has endorsed an extension to June 30 of the state of emergency imposed on January 12 after fatal shootings and violent demonstrations in Noumea. A curfew how applies between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., with a day and night ban on gatherings of more than five people in public places.
