Rakaia hearing continues

Detailed cross-examina-tion on the effects which changes in the level of the Rakaia River would have on salmon was heard by the Planning Tribunal yesterday. In his evidence on Wednesday, Dr Gordon Glova, a fishery scientist with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said a minimum flow of 90.3 cubic metres a second (cumecs) in September to 135.7 cumecs in December was needed to protect salmon and salmon fishing. The draft conservation order on the Rakaia has recommended that a minimum flow be set at 80 cumecs during June to August and 90 cumecs from September to May. Dr Glova gave evidence on behalf of the Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand.

Counsel from groups including Federated Fanners and the North Caterbury Catchment Board, began cross-examining Dr Glova on Wednesday. The crossexamination continued yesterday and will enter its third day today. Mr J. K. Guthrie, counsel for the acclimatisation societies, will also call two more witnesses.
