Sex education backed

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

The possibility of sex education in primary schools has been supported by the School Committee’s Federation.

The intention to allow for this has been announced by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall.

The federation’s president, Mrs Maureen Bamford, said that the proposed section of the draft health

education syllabus had been discussed by her national executive. This had decided that the inclusion in the syllabus of matters related to pubertal change were consistent with the federation’s longstanding support for human development and relationship programmes in primary schools. She said this support was based on questionnaire results at the time of the Johnson Report in 1977.
