Brighter bridges?

Lighting up the bridges over the Avon River could make them an added attraction to tourists, a Christchurch City councillor believes.

Cr Rex Arbuckle has asked the council to con-

sider lighting the bridges from the Bridge of Remembrance to Victoria Street. This would highlight the design of the bridges and provide an extra aspect to the city’s attractions to visitors. If the bridges were lit it would provide a link from

the City Mall in Cashel Street to the Victoria Square development. Noahs Hotel had already made inquiries about lighting the river bank opposite

the hotel in Oxford Terrace, said Cr Arbuckle.

He was certain the illumination of the bridges would prove a success for the council. One bridge could be lit for a start to judge the effect, he said. Council staff will report on the possibility of lighting the bridges.
