Information on adoption
Sir,—Commenting on the Adult Adoption Information Bill, A. B. White (October 2) gives an impression that adoptive parents appear to be thinking “because they have done so much” they feel they should have the right to control the future of the children. Any parent will find it difficult to control the future of their children when they reach adulthood. But this does not mean they stop feeling concerned for them and being a parent Adoptive parents will know the question will come: “Why was I adopted?” or “Will I ever see my birth parents?” It will be the privilege of the adoptive parent to answer that question! If the commitment of privacy of the adoptive parents is honoured, finding one’s origins should not have to be a painful reunion, if this is done through the official channels and with respect for the wishes of all parties concerned. — Yours, etc., MR AND MRS M. ROOS. Rangiora, October 2, 1984.
