Anorexia

Sir,—While I commend your printing of the article on anorexia last Saturday, you belittle your message by publishing front-page photographs of beauty contest winners, models, and unnaturally proportioned women. An extreme example of this occurred on October 2 when your front page boasted a large photograph of two extremely skinny, bikini-clad women advertising Australia’s Gold Coast. Although the event may have been newsworthy, it is clear that what was being sold were the women’s bodies, and not Australia’s tourist attractions. By repeatedly doing this, you will lose your merit as an educational newspaper, and become relegated to the rank of those week-end papers which specialise in front page bikini shots.—Yours, etc.,

NAOMI EDWARDS, October 3, 1984.
