New technology
Sir,—New technology is upon us, with banking from home, and Auckland selling petrol by plastic cards. A room once holding 50 typists’ desks now has one. Yet developers go on building human filing cabinets to let as office space. The Government trains young unemployed as garage attendants. In the next 16 years only 20 per cent or less of the workforce will produce all the cheap goods needed. Farming has already only 20 per cent against its once 50 per cent employed. Three out of the four political parties talk about creating jobs for all. It is obvious some income must come from investment which some already enjoy, not from socialist hand-outs. The present attitude is untenable. No wonder a throw-away article is headed, “Full employment — a ridiculous dream.” — Yours, A. M. COATES. September 5, 1984.
