Cake explodes: two hurt
PA Auckland A waitress is still in hospital after she and another waitress were badly burnt by an “exploding” birthday cake in Auckland last week. Middlemore Hospital yesterday reported that Sonja Luff,, aged 19, was in a comfortable condition with burns to the face, neck, shoulders and forearm. The other waitress, lona Edmonds, aged 23, was still at home recovering from
bums to her neck and ear.
Both caught fire in a packed restaurant when a dish called “Firehouse Happy Birthday,” covered with rum essence, was lit.
“It .just blew up,” Ms Edmonds said yesterday when she described how the accident happened. “I felt as if I was burning all down my left side. The restaurant was packed with about 80 customers and it was panic stations through-
out.” The general manager of Swenson’s Restaurant, Mr John Milner, said the accident was caused by instructions not being followed. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure it will not happen again,” said Mr Milner. The organiser of the Hotel Workers’ Union, Ms Beverly Roser, said that she was furious about the accident and was seeking compensation for the women.
