Breakaway bank group

PA Auckland A group of trading bank employees said yesterday that it had broken from the Bank Officers’ Union over the union’s handling of the extended customer hours dispute. The group said that the union was not taking a strong enough stand on the issue. It said it was pre-

pared to strike, or to refuse to open bank doors before the present 10 a.m. opening hour. The group, the Society of Bank Officers, would take a more militant stance in industrial affairs, said its president, Mr Geoff Barrett, an Auckland bank clerk. The A.N.Z. Bank would employ more staff if addi-

tional work were created by the proposed extension of customer hours, said its general manager, Mr Peter Gilbert. In a message to staff, he said that industrial action by bank officers against Tuesday’s proposed hours extension would not assist the bank’s competitiveness.
