100th time as captain

Roy Newburn has had a long association with Templeton in the Woodward inter-club golf competition, but the match that he would most dearly like to win is the one against Harewood in the second round on Sunday morning. For that match will mark the 100th appearance by Newburn in the championship. The long-serving Templeton captain is in his fifteenth successive year with his club’s premier golf side, and he has been a yeoman worker for the club. Although not one of the game’s strongest strikers, Newburn has an uncanny short game and that has helped him to 34 wins and 17 halved matches. His most successful seasons were in 1974 when he finished with a 90 per cent record, and in

1982 when he won four of , his five matches. 2 Newburn would like to . celebrate his milestone with a win for the sake of his team. Templeton was sur- ~. prisingly held to a draw by , J Central Canterbury in the first round, whereas Hare-,,. wood had a bold opening u with a win over Coringa,;“ which had finished above it in 1983. In other matches in the ■, double round at Hare wood,; on Sunday, the title-holder,.., Waitikiri, has two tough i contests, against Russley., and North Canterbury, •! Christchurch will meet inga in the second round; ■ and if Templeton Hare wood in the morning itwill have to be on its mettle again in the afternoon to thwart Coringa. Bob Schumacher
