Ward system criticism
PA Hamilton The president of the Municipal Association, Hamilton’s Mayor, Mr Ross Jansen, believes that any move to force a ward system on big local bodies will have to be ironed out with the Minister of new local Government, Dr Bassett. Mr Jansen criticised an
announcement by Dr Bassett that proposed legislation would force local bodies with a population of more than 70,000 to introduce the war system. There had been no consultation that he knew of on this, said Mr Jansen. Asked to comment, Mr Jansen said, “It’s is a new
Administration we are dealing with — and we will have to get this consultation issue ironed out from the start." Hamilton people, in a referendum held along with the last municipal elections, supported postal voting, but rejected ward representation in a two-to-one vote.
