Southern Maori votes disallowed
About 2000 people who cast special votes in the Southern Maori electorate have had their votes disallowed because their names did not appear on the electoral roll.
The electorate returning officer, Mr Jack Harris, said from Wellington yesterday that it appeared that some voters were confused about which electorate they should vote in.
The returning officer would write to each person
whose special vote was not counted because their name was not on the roll to see if they wanted to be registered in the Southern Maori electorate. Mr Harris said there had
been a big turn-out of voters in Southern Maori this year compared with the 1981 election. There were 19,000 names listed on the roll and 15,210 valid votes were cast, com-
pared with 14,914 in 1981. The 2000 special votes
which were not counted made the turn-out on polling day even bigger. The final election results are:— SOUTHERN MAORI Mrs T. W. M. TirikateneSullivan (L) 11,792 N. A. Reedy (Mana Motuhake) 1,297 Te A. J. Mei (N) 982 W. K. Amaru (NZP) 427 R. R. Aramakutu (SC) 226 T. (Dun) Mihaka (I) 177 H. Watene (I) 161 Informal 148 Majority for Mrs Tirika-
tene-SulUvan: 10,495., Her election night majority was 6829. In 1981 she had a majority of 8945.
