NZPA-AFP Suzuka, Japan The New Zealander, Graeme Crosby, and his team-mate, Len Willings, of Australia, were forced to retire from the Suzuka Eight Hour Motorcycle Endurance Race at the eightyfifth lap because of engine trouble. Mike Baldwin and Fred Merkel of the United States went on to win the race, run in Japan on Sunday. Baldwin, the 1982 winner of this race, the second leg of the six-race World Endurance Championship series, and Merkel, circled the 5.943-kilometre circuit in the central Japan city of

Suzuka 191 times. France’s Guy Bertin and Dominique Sarron finished second on a Honda two laps behind the American winning team. The favoured Patrik Igoa and Gerard Courdray on a Honda came in third one lap behind the runners-up. Sherry Fridus, of the United States, and Mari Igata of Japan, the only women’s team entered in the race, were placed twenty-fifth, 22 laps behind the champions on the series’ second leg. The third race of the series will be held in Belgium in August.
