Italy leads pentathlon
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles
Italy leads the Olympic modern pentathlon competition after a fine display of high-speed horsemanship in the opening equestrian event.
Two of the three-member Italian team were among five riders who scored the
maximum 1100 points yesterday.
The fastest of the five was the 1982 world champion, Daniele Masala, a Rome physical education teacher, who swept round the 600 metre, 15-obstacle course in one minute 33 seconds, 10 seconds inside
the limit for a top score. Italy’s team score of 3240, including the 1040 tally of Pierpaolo Cristofori, who picked up jumping penalties, gave them a 52-point lead over the second-placed United States. Japan was third. The next event is the fencing.
