More elephants wanted
PA Auckland The Auckland Zoo plans to turn a scarcity of elephants into a surplus. The zoo has had elephant problems for the last two years. In 1982, Ma Shwe, died of a severe heart attack at the age of 18 and last year her replacement, Koru, died, aged only three, apparently from a stomach infection. Finding further replace-
ments had proved difficult and the zoo’s director Mr Derek Wood, said that a breeding programme might be started early next year. While it had only one elephant now, an Asian female named Kashin, the zoo was searching worldwide for two more — a male and a female. ($“We are very interested in having a trio of two females and a male with
the possibility of breeding in the near future,” said Mr Wood. h ; Work on a new elephant enclosure was due to be completed early next year and Mr Wood said he hoped to secure the two elephants before then because of quarantine requirements. “There is a huge demand for elephants on ihe world market, particularly young. Asians,” he said.
