Golden start in Games
NZPA staff correspondent Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire Shelley Hadfield, of Napier, broke a world record as she won a pentathlon gold medal at the World Paralympics in England yesterday. She set a time of 42.01 s for the 200 m, beating the previous Wheelchair Olympics mark by 0.75. Hadfield’s win gave the 10-strong New Zealand team an excellent start against 41 countries in an
event held to coincide with the Los Angeles games. Competing in the class three women’s pentathlon, Hadfield, aged 19, had a convincing win in the 1500 m, winning by the length of the final straight. Hadfield also competed strongly in the shot put, discus and javelin which completed the pentathlon. She totalled 4976 points, and is a bright prospect for further medals. Oamaru’s Trish Hill won the silver medal in the class
two women’s pentathlon, with 3842 points. The team captain, Ross Hynds (Mt Maunganui), was fifth in the men’s class one pentathlon, while Graham Condon (Christchurch) was fourth in both the class two pentathlon and discus. Robert Courtney (Auckland) was fifth in the 200 m. Christchurch’s Roly Crichton was fifth fastest qualifier in the 50m breaststroke, but withdrew from the event.
