Water theme off Conservation
“Water Means Life” is the theme of Conservation Week 1984 which will begin on Saturday. All aspects of water — its necessity to life, its domestic and commercial uses and as part of the environment — will be emphasised during the week. Conservation Week will begin in Christchurch at 10 a.m. on Saturday with an open day at Brooklands Lagoon organised by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. The day will be used to introduce the public to a walkway project of the society. The walkway will provide access to the lagoon and eventually a series of “hides” will be placed along it so that birds may be observed without being disturbed. The track starts in Heyders Road, about 200 m west of the main Spencer
Park entrance. Students of Christchurch Teachers’ College, the Lands and Survey Department, and wildlife rangers will give talks at Christchurch primary aschools, and a secondary schools’ speech contest on the theme, “Water Means Life,” will be held at Shirley Boys’ High School at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, August 3. There would be no Conservation Week information centre in Cathedral Square because in past years the weather had been so bad, said the chairman of the Christchurch organising committee, Mr Barry Thomas. However, a lot of information about water had been sent out to schools, and window displays would be set up by J. Ballantyne and Company and the Christchurch City Council, he said.
