Some orphans badly off
NZPA-Reuter Moscow Some Soviet orphanages are so badly supplied that the children go without warm clothing and have never seen an orange, says the Communist Party daily, “Pravda”. “Pravda” said most of the country’s 944 orphanages and children’s homes were not so bad but conditions in some were appalling, with insufficient furniture, clothing and too little interest shown in the children by staff. One orphanage had had five directors in five years and two of them had been sacked on criminal charges. The children’s organisation newspaper, “Pioneers’ Pravda,” had received letters from some orphanages complaining that staff organised only interest groups and games for the benefit of the occasional important visitor.
