ISO strike at Hornby factory
Workers at Austral Standard Cables at Hornby will meet this morning to consider whether to continue a strike which began last Friday.
About 190 workers are on strike over a dispute which began about two weeks ago when a night shift worker was dismissed after allegedly urinating in the company’s grounds.
A personal grievance hearing was set up with an independent chairman to try to resolve the dispute but it broke down when the Engineers Union withdrew, alleg-
ing that the company intended to take the case to the Arbitration Court rather than abide by the chairman’s decision. The chairman had not made a decision at that stage. Mr Jed O’Connell, assistant secretary of the union, said that the night shift had spontaneously gone on strike about 7 p.m. on Friday. The workers had been supported by the day shift on Monday and yesterday. No-one from the company wished to comment last evening.
