Drug approved for sale

PA Auckland An anti-leukaemia drug, amsacrine, pioneered in New Zealand, has been approved for sale. The drug was produced by teams working under the late Professor Bruce Cain and Dr Bruce Baguiey at the Auckland Cancer Research Laboratory. General prescribing of the drug will start as soon as Health Department ap-

proval is gazetted, which is expected to be done in a week or two. Amsacrine, also known as meta-amsa, has already been marketed in Canada and Europe and is awaiting registration in the United States, Australia and Britain. Between 10 and 20 Aucklanders have received the drug in clinical trials and it is thought the result of these studies helped to speed New

Zealand registration. Dr Baguiey said the drug was used in combination with other agents. He believed the cost of prescriptions would be thousands of dollars a year, rather than hundreds of thousands. Interest in the drug is growing and increasing numbers of centres around the world are using it in the treatment of leukaemia.
