Woman acquitted on wounding charge

A young woman who stabbed her friend five times during a drunken fracas after they had been drinking for several hours, was found not guilty on a wounding charge in the High Court yesterday. Mr Justice White discharged Waiana Suzanne Kotara, aged 17, an unemployment beneficary, on a charge of wounding Suzanne Margaret Berry with intent

to injure on April 20. Mr A. N. D. Garrett appeared for Kotara who gave evidence that she had acted in self defence when Barry, who had drunk a considerable amount of beer and then whisky, attacked her with an axe handle. The knife, which was on a window sill, was used to assist in opening the window. The jury took four hours to reach its verdict.
