Imported trawler still sought

PA Nelson Skeggs Foods, Ltd, will appeal to the new Minister of Trade and Industry over the department’s refusal to grant an import licence for a trawler to replace the sunken Hawea, according to the company’s secretary, Mr Keith Elwood, in Dunedin yesterday. He said that it was not economic to lease a trawler and have one built -in New Zealand as the department had suggested. Loss of the Hawea had reduced by a third the amount of fish supplied to the Nelson factory and the shortfall was being made up by buying fish from other companies. That was not a long-term solution, he said. Mr Elwood said that trawlers were available in Europe and that to buy and bring one into use would take three months. This included bringing the ship to New Zealand and modifying it to meet New Zealand standards. A trawler would take aboutjfl months to build in New Zealand or about seven months overseas, he said.
