Marshall ruled out

NZPA-Reuter London The West Indies fast bowler, Malcolm Marshall, has been ruled out by injury from the fourth cricket test against England starting at Old Trafford, Manchester, tomorrow. Marshall fractured his left thumb while fielding on the first morning of the third test at Leeds, although he batted one-handed and captured his test best figures of seven for 53 in England’s second innings with his hand in plaster. When the plaster was removed yesterday at a hospital in Derby, it was found the injury had not healed and Marshall is likely to be out of action for a further

The. Barbadian paceman, who is the West Indies’ most successful bowler in the series with 18 wickets, will probably be replaced by either Winston Davis or another fast bowler, Courtney Walsh, who is uncapped. Davis, who has been playing for Glamorgan this season, recently joined the touring team because of injuries to both Marshall and his fellow paceman, Milton Small.

The 35-year-old former England captain has been feeling unwell since Friday

and was not fully fit when he played in last Saturday’s one-day final at Lords between his county, Warwickshire, and Lancashire.

© The West Indian cricketers continued their sequence of overwhelming victories against English teams yesterday when they thrashed Derbyshire by an innings and 169 runs. Resuming at 46 for one in its second innings, Derbyshire was soon in trouble as Winston Davis, who captured five for 39 in the county’s first innings, claimed the scalps of the overnight pair, Tim Barnett and John Morris, and finished with five for 32.
