Herlihy to train

Special correspondent Auckland Tony Herlihy, one of New Zealand’s leading drivers, will join the ranks of professional trainers at the start of the new season. He said yesterday that he planned to have no more than eight horses: they would be stabled on Len Bayer’s property at Pukekohe. Herlihy, aged 25, has worked for Bayer for a year after being eight years with another Pukekohe trainer, Arnie Gadsby. He began his career in trotting with Gadsby, who is his uncle. Herlihy, with 63 wins, is

third on the national drivers’ premiership this season. He was second in the 1982-83 term with 69 wins. His team at the outset will consist of four qualified maidens, three pacers and a trotter, Vander Lome, Dominic and two rising two year olds. One of the youngsters is a gelding by Mark Lobell from Irton Globe (dam of Seville) and the other is by Dominion Hanover from Abbey and so a brother of Dominic. Bayer will continue to train, but will concentrate on horses he either owns or has a share in.
