Chess brain power

The sponsoring firm of this year’s South Island chess championship, IBM New Zealand, Ltd, will enter its own representative in the $l2OO tournament, to be held in Christchurch from August 20 to 25. The IBM computer will match its wits with the top South Island players and possibly several of the leading lights from the North Island. Computers have usually been unable to compete successfully against top-flight chess players, but the computers have become more sophisticated recently. The sponsor’s computer will add considerable interest to the tournament, even if it will not be eligible for the first prize of $5OO.

A score of three and a half or four points from a possible eight would be a respectable one for the computer.
