$US weaker
PA Wellington The United States dollar weakened from its strong opening in relatively quiet foreign exchange trading yesterday. The New Zealand dollar benefited from the weaker United States unit. After opening at 0.4936/39 U.S. dollars, it lifted to 0.4951/54 at the close. The Reserve Bank indicative mid-rate finished at 0.4950 from its opening at 0.4940. Dealers said there was some unusual offshore interest in the New Zealand unit. They said offshore banks with customers with large New Zealand exposure were either taking cover for a stronger New Zealand dollar or profit-taking after devaluation of the New Zealand dollar last week.
