Australia closes off bottom
Heavy turnover in the market leader, BHP, and a number of good special sales exemplified a surprising resilience by local sharemarkets in the face of heavy falls on overseas exchanges and continued weakness in the gold price, brokers said. Scattered bargain hunting by local institutions in the afternoon saw the all-ordin-aries index close 3.5 points lower at 671.5 after touching 670.5 in the morning session. The all-industrials index fell 5.4 points to 960.1, while the all-resources index lost just 2.1 points to 447.4. Losing issues led ad-
vances by about two to one in healthy turnover of 29.8 million shares valued at sAust4s.B million including $5.3 million in offmarket deals. Brokers said they had expected the day’s performance to be twice as bad when the key market index fell four points in the first hour in response to new interest rate fears arising from higher than anticipated growth in U.S. economic activity during the second quarter.
