Nude-law change sought
NZPA-AAP Brisbane The Queensland Government is considering a tightening of its laws after a girlie magazine shot a 12page nude colour spread of a Sunshine Coast mother and her daughter, aged 16, for its September issue. However, the Queensland Welfare Services Department appears unlikely to act against the mother, Sue Elvin, aged 33, or her daughter, Louise, of Yaroomba. The State Welfare Services Minister, Mr Geoff Muntz, has ordered department officers to investigate if there had been any contravention of the Children’s Services Act.
“However, legal advice is that it would be difficult to mount a successful prosecution in this case.” Mr Muntz said he would' be looking closely at ways to tighten the State law. A Sydney spokesman for the magazine, Stuart White,
said the photographs of Mrs Elvin and her daughter were tastefully done and not particularly revealing. Sue and Louise Elvin have defended their decision to pose nude for a centrefold.
Mrs Elvin said her daughter was “a very mature young lady who, having reached the age of 16, is legally entitled to make her own decisions.”
The decision to appear in the magazine was “very much her own and was made entirely with my consent.”
