Bearings are not particularly glamorous products but they are vital to the successful functioning of a wide range of industry. Practically everything that rotates in industry is rotating on bearings. If only one bearing fails, a car will not run, and if one bearing fails in a paper machine the whole production stops. When bearing failure oc-
curs, it is a matter ot urgency. Because of the dependence of industry on bearings, SKF has always had as its main target the production of the best possible quality of bearings. The life of a bearing also depends on it being properly mounted and dismounted, and for this reason the company attaches considerable importance to providing technical assistance for
its customers. When bearings do fail, their speedy replacement is of great . importance. For this reason, the company, in its warehouses throughout New Zealand, carries extensive stocks of bearings, and considerable bearing stocks are also held by the company’s distributors. If a required bearing is not immediately on hand, the company’s computerised
inventory system will track it down in a matter of seconds. The New Zealand company stocks more than 10,000 bearing types and only rarely does the company have to look outside New Zealand for a particular bearing. When it does, it has immediate access to the SKF Group’s bearing stocks, involving some 30,000 specifications.
