‘Cold war’ ends for group—claim
PA ; Dunedin The change of t Government means a “cold war” has ended for the PostPrimary Teachers’. Association, says the national president, Mr Tony Steele. “We are no longer obliged to spend so much of our energy and time trying to break through the educational prejudices of the member for Papakura (the outgoing Minister of Education, Mr Wellington),” Mr Steele said. “There’s a deep sigh of relief being heaved by secondary teachers that all the unproductive time wasting is behind us,” he said. “We can now get started on restructuring the education
system.” There were likely to be many issues on which the association and the new Labour Government’s Minister of Education would not see eye to eye, Mr Steele said. “But it’s a matter of style and the new style has already shown itself to be different,” he said. “In particular the university entrance-sixth form certificate debate where, instead of having to construct an elaborate educational dance routine to try and cope with the former Minister’s intransigence, we know that we will have a Government that’s prepared to listen.”
